What is a Bread–and–Butter Note?

A guest thanking a host for providing hospitality.

The phrase is a turn-of-the-century expression. These notes should be written shortly after someone has provided hospitality, such as an overnight or weekend stay at their home. Written in the early 20th century, they have an elegant quality and I hope to see them make a comeback. You can go a step further and create a beautiful, bountiful bread basket attaching a beautifully written Bread–and–Butter thank you note.
